I've worked with Long Island Works Coalition for more than a decade and the connections this organization helps foster between businesses and schools are mutually beneficial. I encourage any entrepreneur looking to entrench themselves in their community to reach out to LI Works at
http://www.liworks.org.
The good news is, LI Works will continue to serve the region. Here is a release:
More than 200 avid supporters of the Long Island Works Co…

One year after the collapse of Wall Street signaled the start of the Great Recession, another struggling industry is moving fast to change. And by change I mean charge. There’s been a seismic shift in online journalism, from a philosophy of free content to one where everything may soon disappear behind pay walls.
Say goodbye to the era of the Free Internet. The New York Times recently wrote how Steven Brill and Journalism Online.com, once the lone venture seeking to build a paid online model fo…

Very diverse issue of LI Pulse magazine. The September issue is out and features Long Island's best attorneys, fall fashion and a talk with new Stony Brook University president Samuel Stanley.
I contributed a story featuring Stony Brook football's two 1,000-yard running backs, homegrow…

The latest LI Pulse magazine is out. And I contributed a piece on fishing Montauk. I personally love everything about Montauk in August. It's a laid back beach town. My wife and I have spent many a weekend there. And having gone out on a Viking party boat for ni…

LI Entrepreneurs.com launched one year ago today. The site had no ambition other than to provide a virtual hub to network and exchange ideas. We’re now 100 members and growing.
It’s been a year of tremendous economic challenges across the globe and here on Long Island, perhaps the…

Don't know if you've had a chance to pick up a copy lately, but
LI Pulse magazine has done a nice job of redesign in 2009. In fact, LI Pulse just relaunched this week a vastly improved web site as well. I'm a regular contrib…

I might throw a ticker tape parade for whoever came up with the following novel idea. A Huntington business is offering to shred any of your documents for free next Saturday. I'll be there with a few boxes. Check out the press release:
Raymond James Financial Services and Shred-it will be hosting a community "Shred Day" on Saturday, June 6, 2009, from 11 am - 3 pm (rain date: Sunday, June 7). Local residents and business owners are invited to get their home or business paperwork organized and h…

Looks like LI Works Coalition has been spared. Fellow LI Entrepreneurs member Lisa Strahs-Lorenc just gave me the good news.
Here is the press release:
The Long Island Works Coalition has entered into an agreement in principle with Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey, Inc., which will allow Long Island Works to continue to operate while a long-term relationship between the two organizations is negotiated.
The relationship grew out of the complimentary strengths of…

So you think you had bad timing. Here is an example of a high-profile local business that's been struck down by the Great Recession. The good news is the New York Dragons pro football team, and Arena Football in general, look to move forward in 2010.
Check out the story from Dave Caldwell in The New York Times:
"EYLAN HARDING, the coach of the New York Dragons football team, has a windowless office so deep inside Nassau Coliseum that visitors might need a global positioning system to find it.…

As you may know, Long Island Works Coalition faced the threat of closure. Here is an update from Lisa Strahs-Lorenc:
We are overwhelmed by the support we have received over the past few weeks. Our deepest THANKS to all of you who have made financial contributions, sent letters/ made calls, reached into your rolodex, started student advocacy campaigns, and so much more.
We are still 'fighting the good fight' to be able to help our students have successful careers on Long Island and help our bu…

As a reporter at Newsday for 11 years, I've seen what impact Long Island Works Coalition makes working with school districts. I believe it's a worthwhile organization, but now it's in danger of closing.
They need budget help. Spread the word. Here is a story reported by John Hildebrand in Newsday:
Staffers at the Melville-based Long Island Works Coalition, who have arranged thousands of student work internships over the past decade, fear they soon may be seeking new jobs themselves.
The nonp…

Fellow member Tom Grech sent me this email and I wanted to pass it along:
I recently became affiliated with Action Long Island through my teaching at Farmingdale State College. In an effort to be a “strong voice for Long Island ”, Action Long Island has formed a number of task forces including Housing and Development, Healthcare, Transportation, Environment and Energy and my personal favorite, Small Business and Economic Development.
As a member of this Taskforce, we are committed to helping t…

The Long Island Association and its president, Matt Crosson, are sounding the alarm for local business owners to look at what's going on in Albany. Apparently, the state budget is not good for Long Island.
Here is an excerpt from the Long Island Business News, in the Monday, March 30 edition, regarding the LIA's stance:
The head of the region’s most powerful business group is calling the budget deal struck in Albany over the weekend a disaster for Long Island.
In a statement sent to the Long…

Chances are you've heard about Twitter by now. It's the latest, greatest social networking tool, a mini blog of 140 characters or less. It's gotten the most practical use so far by media organizations breaking news or filing real-time updates from anywhere this side of a sports arena to a…

As I sat in on the Press Club of Long Island's forum on the Future of Long Island Media at Newsday on Thursday night, it became obvious that the esteemed panel -- and the companies they represent -- were still grappling for answers on how to weather the current storm.
Newsday Publisher Tim Knight hinted the age of free Internet may be over. It's a topic several newspaper publishers have openly discussed in recent months as papers continue to lose revenue to big search firms such as Google and n…

Good thing I'm only 35. I've got time to rebuild my retirement funds. When I left Newsday a year ago to pursue business interests, I did what nearly everyone leaving a corporate job today does with his 401K. I rolled it into an IRA.
I was tempted to take a good chunk out, pay the penalty and use it to help bankroll my venture. But I didn't. As it turns out, I was even more dumb. Sensing my youth and bullish outlook on tech, I placed all into Yahoo. I can hear the groans already. I'm rolling my…

Just met with Felice Cantatore, the general manager of the Long Island Press. They are working on a new web portal that just might change the way you surf. It's called

So you want to get on the web. It starts with a domain name -- preferably one featuring your company, product or service.
But what if the name you want is taken? There are more than 100 million domain names registered worldwide, according to one domain registrar. Many websites are simply parking pages with Pay Per Click advertisements. ISPs and web hosters will often point unused domains to a parking webpage with PPC advertising.
In other words, most registered names are not being actively use…

My wife and I went to the cover party for LI Pulse's November issue on Wednesday. It was hosted at Prime, a swanky spot in Huntington on the bay.
I must admit I love the vibe of the magazine.
Not only does the general interest publication cover Long Island well, but the glossy monthly gives the area some respectability. The City gets all the love with publications such as The New Yorker, Time Out New York and Gotham, to name a few. But Long Island is worthy of chronicling too.
And the cover p…
